The range runs from understated single-colour elegance and bright floral patterns through to aprons with humorous prints or personalised appliqués. Because ultimately an apron does not only have to serve its practical purpose, it also has to look good — otherwise it will not get worn.

Individual designs

There is plenty of choice when it comes to personalising women's aprons. One-off pieces created this way make an ideal gift, and they can easily be combined into a set with a cookery book or particular kitchen tools. Broadly speaking, personalisation comes down to printing or embroidery. Embroidery is more durable, but its possibilities are limited to lettering or simple logos. A multi-coloured design such as a photo or a funny cartoon can only be transferred onto the apron using special printing processes. Here it is worth choosing a high-quality printing method rather than the first cheap offer that comes along, particularly when the background is a dark shade.

A perfect fit

Women's bib aprons are placed around the neck with a neck loop and adjusted to the individual figure with ties at the waist. Particularly short or tall women are best served by a model with an adjustable neck loop, so that the apron can be matched precisely to their height. This not only makes the apron adaptable to the wearer's body, it also allows it to cover and protect the clothes underneath as well as possible. One more thing to look for in the ties: over a long period of wear, wide ties are noticeably more comfortable than thin ones.

Front pockets for small utensils

Most good-quality aprons have one to three pockets for small utensils that need to be close at hand. Wooden spoon, brush, corkscrew or phone all have their own place in the apron pockets and are ready whenever you need them. Hunting around for the little helpers is a thing of the past — from now on they are right there on the apron.

The right fabric quality

Kitchen aprons for women are usually offered in high-quality pure cotton. Synthetic fibres are only rarely added; where they are, liquids soak in less and the apron can be wiped down quickly. The more densely and thickly the fabric is woven, the higher the quality of the apron. That is why manufacturers of good kitchen aprons often state the fabric weight. It should be at least 260 g/m². A thin fabric is cheaper, but it carries the risk that grease stains in particular will soak through and reach the clothes underneath after all.

Particularly elegant women's aprons are made from linen. Linen is very robust, breathable and dirt-repellent. The natural fibre is a favourite for regional organic textiles, because flax grows locally and this hardy plant generally does not need pesticides. The colour range of this sustainable fibre is less varied than that of cotton, however. Depending on the colour, a linen apron should only be washed at 40 °C. Cotton copes easily with 60 °C even in bright colours and can therefore be cleaned somewhat more thoroughly.
